A very popular and cheap way to go around town is the municipal bicycle rental, Bicing. It’s easy: just take a bike from one of the stands (200 or so of those), and drop it on another stand when you reach your destination.
The same idea, which originally started here as far as I know, has been taken over by Paris and Washington DC.
PS: several people asked me fora a picture of the Torre Agbar at night. Well, it’s coming, friends! But not quite right now. Bit of patience required.
In Spain, everybody has a National ID Number, which you use all the time, everywhere. So, when you register with Bicing, you register it. Through this number, they can find out a lot of things about you, your address amongst other things. Bicing gives you a card, which you need to swipe when you borrow a bike, and the ID number is on it. It’s relatively foolproof, in a Big Brother kind of way.

They are installing the same type of bikes here in Kaohsiung but people have to pay for them.

This is a terrific idea! Not to mention that it makes a great photo. I believe that they are trying to start a similar program in Boston. My question is, however, how do they keep them from being stolen?

This idea is spreading around the world. In Stockholm it has been in use for a few years now. Around 1000 bikes can be rented from April to the last of November.
