Barcelona, a photo a day

A new highlight in the Barcelona skyline is the W Hotel, nicknamed la vela, the sail. Built by the renowned architect Ricardo Bofil, a local, and entirely made of glass, directly on the seafront, with some spectacular views over the sea and the mountains. Some of the names of the rooms and suites: wonderful room, fabulous room, fantastic suite, wow suite and, of course the Extreme Wow Suite, probably on top of the building.
Their prices… Well, it’s a 5 stars hotel, so just let your imagination go wild.

As the outside is made of glass, it reflects the ambient light. I will go back one day when the sky isn’t as blue as today, to see the different reflections. Might be interesting.

The building is in the port area, very much apart away from anything else. The only surrounding buildings are port infrastructure, which will be destroyed anyway, as they want to build a convention center next to the hotel. So, should you want to stay there during the next few years, be prepared for some heavy machinery and a lot of dust and noise.
Also, a lot of people obviously protested, environmentalists specially. Byt they seemed to have calmed down in recent times. The last protest was about 3 weeks ago, when the hotel opened.

  4. Fabulous! Yes, it would be interesting to see it in different light and weather. I like its nickname too — very apt.

  6. I'm not surprised at the nick-name – that's exactly what it looks like. A very unusual building.

  7. This building does look like the sail. Or is it the side of a blade knife?

  9. Wow, now there's a unique design. It's gorgeous. With it being so modern does it fit in with the other buildings around it?

  11. Stunning blue on blue. I also do not like box-like modern buildings, but this one is creatively shaped and has visual appeal.

  13. I'm usually don't like glass buildings but this one has quite an interesting shape. Plus I'm a sucker for rooms with a view. If only they should lower their prices I'll be the first one to book a room 🙂

Yep, that's right, minus the fleet of white Rolls Royce they have over there. I read somewhere that Barcelona is trying to become the new Dubai.
