Barcelona, a photo a day

Little boxes

1. Little boxes on the hillside,
Little boxes made of ticky-tacky,
Little boxes, little boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

2. And the people in the houses
All go to the university,
And they all get put in boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
And there’s doctors and there’s lawyers
And business executives,
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

3. And they all play on the golf-course,
And drink their Martini dry,
And they all have pretty children,
And the children go to school.
And the children go to summer camp
And then to the university,
And they all get put in boxes
And they all come out the same.

4. And the boys go into business,
And marry, and raise a family,
And they all get put in boxes,
Little boxes, all the same.
There’s a green one and a pink one
And a blue one and a yellow one
And they’re all made out of ticky-tacky
And they all look just the same.

  6. Catherine, it was Arlo.
Hadv, I didn't actually open one of the weed boxes, but weed still being officially illegal here, despite of the many grow shops around, I doubt it very much that they contained it. Although it is actually the intended purpose of many of the boxes…

  7. Wonderful, colorful boxes. I'm not familiar with the song, but it seems to fit.

  8. Beautiful little boxes! They look absolutely edible. A very cheerful photo.

Thanks for the Malvina Reynolds, too – I met her a few times, she was a very interesting person. (The “boxes” she wrote about were the little square stucco houses that were built in long rows up and down the treeless hills in Daly City, California — a picture, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Daly_City.jpg .)

  11. I like the weeds boxes the most. Do they have weeds inside too? The box should be used in one of the episode's opening. Nice photo!

  13. I loved this song when it was out in the 60s or so – about all the faceless housing estates that were spreading like wildfire at that time in our cities and causing major social unrest – suburbia gone mad. Pete Seeger performed the song and made it a hippie hit. A bit like Alice's Restaurant by the inimicable Arlo Guthrie (or Woodie, I always get mixed up) – great social commentary.
And your little boxed fit perfectly!

  16. What a wonderful photo, and an awesome poem as well. Or is it a song? Very cool, regardless! Loved your kitty photo from yesterday, too– what a sweetie-pie!

  17. Love the photograph… song is a little eerie for me… dont know why :)))! Perhaps it reminds me of the children singing in the background of a horror movie!
