Escargots, or Alsace, part 2


Our bloger friend Marie, from the beautiful town of Montpellier, Herault, Southern France, asked following question a few days ago: why do French people eat snails? Well, here is my small contribution. On the 24th of december 2009, after 48 years, 6 months and 4 days on this planet of ours, I’ve finally let myself be convinced. I tried it. This is a special kind I hadn’t seen before, with a pastry shell.
Never again!
My wife liked it, it was a first for her as well.
What does this have to do with Barcelona, and Catalunya in general? They eat a lot of them as well, here!

  6. Oh, okay, so that's where we got it from. Snails are very popular here too, cooked in coconut milk especially. Haven't had any in decades though — fishing out those little buggers from their shells is a chore. I don't like having to 'hunt' for my food. I'd be willing to try these!

  9. I've eaten snails when I lived in Barcelona. My roommate owned a snail restaurant and she invited me to try them.

    They were so delicious ! They were crispy and chewy with garlic and olive oil flavor. So good !

    It's a Catalan dish, and it is very popular.

  11. If anyone tries to get me to try them, I'll say that you said they were “yucky in the tucky.”
    (That's an expression our girls use – the opposite of course to “yummy in the tummy.”)

  12. For myself I prefer biscuits from a cardboard box, one can feel safe with the list of ingredients. My sister, Miss Darcy, however, may be partial to a snail or two. I have often seen her watching the thrushes crack them open in the back garden but our Big Sister is inordinately fond of the things and is always rescuing them.
