Barcelona, a photo a day

Watery Wednesday

This is Venice, Italy, last winter. High tide on Piazza di San Marco. This lady seemed to enjoy it! The other one not so much.

Una delle signore sembra contentissima, l’altra no.

  6. No, the tide does not cover the square all the time. It goes up and down. And no, there are no ponds, it is sea coming in and covering half of the town in up to 50cm to a meter of water. The municipality of Venice installs then wooden gangways. This usually happens mostly during winter. And it's great fun!

  9. I would love to be stomping around in some puddles right now! If they were in Venice I would love it even more.

  10. Does the tide always cover the plaza? I would think that would destroy the tiles…
At first, I thought it was just a heavy rain causing some flooding!

  14. I was once on a tour of the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Rome with an Italian tour guide who was from Rome. We asked if he tells his mother when his tours were in Rome. He said that he does not because he does not want his mother to come to the hotel and brag about her son, the tour director.

He said that one time he was in Rome and called his mother. She asked where he was. He said that he was leading a tour in Venice and he had a few moments to call her from St. Mark's Square while his tour group was inside the Doge's Palace. She asked if he was in St. Mark's Square at that very moment, and he said “Yes.”

She replied, “I am watching St. Mark's Square on TV right now, and it is under water.”
