Barcelona, a photo a day

Market day in North Catalunya

How to choose a good melon? One of the last great remaining mysteries on this planet.

We spent the weekend in Argeles sur Mer (catalan: Argelers de la Merenda), in the french part of Catalunya. And yes, Saturday was market day. And no, I did not forget the camera!

Before you buy, you need to check the ware! And if you’re good at it, you’ll get the best tomatoes in the world!

PS, much later… I slightly re-modeled this post, as many of you seem to prefer what is now the first photo.

  4. I agree with brattcat about the second photo… There is so much color and market activity!

To select a good melon? The smooth end should have a slight “give” when you press it with your thumb and sniff in the same spot for a good melon scent. Voila!

  10. I've seen people hold the melon in one hand and tap it a few times with two fingers of the other hand. Supposedly, one listens to the sound as the melon is being tapped and also feel the vibration the melon makes. ?? Who knows ??

    Have a nice day!
