A last one…

Back from too short holidays in the french countryside, sigh.
So, what about a last (kind of) bicycle, for the fun of it, before passing onto something else?

This is bicycle, believe it or not. An expensive one, about 4000 USD, 3500 euros.

Ready for tomorrow?

Sorry about this…

Imagen%25201271

Sorry about the bad quality of this photo, it was taken on the fly with a very basic mobile phone a few years ago, on the Plaza d’ Espana.
But then, the bad quality might be a good thing, at least for some …
This photo is not possible anymore. Until 2 years ago, public nudity was legal in Barcelona.

Another bike, getting ready for the CDP theme day!

The bike-house

SONY DSC

Saw him all the time, for several years, a seemingly homeless guy with his house on his bike.Good luck to you, dude.

The bike tours

SONY DSC

Quite a lot of tours of any kind in Barcelona, even bike tours. No need to BYO!

More bikes in their natural environment soon to come, getting ready for the great worldwide City Daily Photos one and unique Theme Day, on August 1st! Don’t you miss it!!!!!

Eye revolution

_MG_8798

Let’s go to me olde home for the day, London. Fancy a few revolutions on the London eye?

More sky photos on the excellent Skywatch Friday meme!

Viva la revolución!

DSC00432

May 1st. This month’s theme day is revolution, la revolución! This is what happened in Barcelona, Madrid, London, and so on, a while back, youth fed up with politicians and bankers, of course all of them corrupt. A political party came out of it, Podemos, we can, the second strongest party in Spain. Many good things to say about them, many bad things as well (their ideal seems to be Chavez, in Venezuela………)

Click here to see what my friends from the City Daily Photo family did.

Staying on the subject…

Perfect for circumnavigation… Some kind of revolution: the movement of an object in a circular or elliptical course around another or about an axis or centre, according to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary.

Jamón, Jamón

SONY DSC

April… Let’s start the month with the City Daily Photo theme day, won’t we! Theme: my camera-shy self portrait. Well, here I am on Calle Pelaio, hiding behind the hams reflected in what used to be the Happybooks shop. It is now a so-called a Jamóneria, a ham shop. I am always very sad to see a bookshop closing, btw.

You know what to do… Click here to see what my friends from CDP did with this theme.

Monthly theme day: what would… Oh look, there is Superman on the roof!

DSC00155_tonemapped

What would you miss most, should you have to leave the city where you are blogging from? Not an easy one, so many things come to mind. Would it be the beaches, would it be the culture scene, coffee, the 100-odd museums in town? No, no a single thing, but rather all of them combined in what I would call the spirit of Barcelona, the sheer cheerful craziness of the place. As I’m not living there anymore, I perfectly know what I miss.

See more here!

And the winner is…

Monthly theme day: take away store

Well, different countries, different takeaways. Here is the guy who actually cooks those nice sausages you’re taking away with bread and mustard. Sweat in peace, my friend.

During a recent manifestation against animal trials in labs… Very serious looking young riot policeman.
Oh yeah: it is totally illegal in Spain to take photos of policemen. Shame on me.

PINK!!! And a bit of blue.

Well, after sooooo many messages on this blog and on Facebook asking me to carry on blogging (sounds like an old British movie…)… I’m back. Not every day, it will be Barcelona, a photo now and then, whenever I can.
Today, it is theme day, and the theme is, you guessed it, pink. This photo was taken during this year’s Gay Pride.
Thanks by the way to bitingmidge for his work and dedication!

Not only in Venice…

… but in Barcelona as well, we do have some glassblowers. And glass shapers.

Yes, it is theme day again, and the theme is the creative artisan. Click here to see more entries to the theme.

Pedestrian crossings, part 3

Took quite a few photos when I was researching for the theme day, here is another one, same place, same sky.

Pedestrian crossings in Barcelona, take 2

Top of the Ramblas, just before Plaza de Catalunya. A pedestrian crossing, perfect place for having a chat. Some people are even crossing on the stripes, amazing! Probably tourists 😉

April theme day: pedestrian crossings

April theme day… To my surprise, I could not find a single pedestrian crossing in my quite extensive archives. So, a very good opportunity for a photo shoot! This was taken on Calle Pelai on Saturday evening. The colors were gorgeous!
To see what others did, just click here!

Monthly theme day for march: the end!

Well, the theme day for march was cafe chairs. Here is my last photo about this, an early morning in the south of France, not too far from here. And a very happy Easter to everybody!

The theme for April 1st is pedestrian crossing.

Theme day continued…..aka try this, darling!

This month’s theme day was about cafe chairs. And it’s a real joy for me, as I have some many many photos on this subject.
So, here we are in Strasbourg, Alsace, northeastern part of France. My hometown.

Theme day continued…A panorama, aka post 1400

Some more cafe tables, busy ones, on Plaza Real, our very own royal square.

Post 1400!!!

Theme day continued

Some more cafe tables, continuing this month’s theme day. Heavy rain yesterday, but we had some very nice days already, and summer will be here soon. In a few weeks, instead of looking for the sun, we will be avoiding it, and look for a cool place in the shade. Good times are coming!

More cafe chairs and tables…

You see the people with short sleeves??? Yep, spring is finally here!

Cafe culture

It’s winter. You want a coffee and a cigarette. But you cannot have both inside a cafe, as it is against the law to smoke inside public places, shops, restaurants, cafes…
Here’s the solution: some chairs on the street or square, an awning around them, and a gas heater. Et voila, enjoy your espresso and your smoke!

Theme day, continued…

Some more cafe chairs… No, wait: chiringuito chairs! A chiringuito is a beach cafe.

CDP theme day: cafe chairs

Darn, I totally forgot about the monthly theme day, normally on the first day of the month. So anyway, better late than…
Inside one of my favorite cafes in town, a place called Pudding.

You might notice the last known portrait of the late Duke of Barkhampton, by none other than Reginald Theophilius Wuff, a museum piece.

Theme day: umbrellas

It’s theme day again, umbrellas this month. Not much rain in Barcelona lately, so here is one I took in Santiago de Compostela, a pilgrimage place in the north-west of Spain, 1000km from here, a few months ago.

The water’s edge

It’s theme day again, youhouh!!!! This month’s theme is, you guessed it, the water’s edge. This is Badalona beach, 3 or 4 years ago.

Click here to see what other participants did.

The silhouetto of a man…

It is theme day again! The theme, you guessed it, is silhouette. Please click here to see other participants’ interpretations.

Update. I had posted a Queen video here, but it seemed to interfere, to create unwanted popups. It is not the first time it happens, beware of what people hide in Youtube! So, I removed it.
The video? Bohemian rhapsody, of course!

Let’s walk together towards a common goal! Queuing for the public toilet.

Right. It is theme day, and the theme is people watching. Please check here to see what other participants did, or to post your own entry to the theme.

Gaudi’s sudoku

It’s theme day again! Yeah! And the portal is still down… WHAT TO DO??? No worries, mates, there is a way. Even 2 ways.
First,  you can post your posts (…) here, at Julie’s place. The more obvious choice. You know what to do, you’ve been there before.
And also, for all FBers, there is Eric’s page.

So, about this photo. This is on the Passion facade of the Sagrada Familia, the unfinished cathedral in Barcelona designed by Antoni Gaudi. Each row and column add up to 33, the supposed age of Christ at his death. In fact there are supposed to be exactly 33 different four number groupings that add up to 33; can you find them all? I tried, but guess I’m more literary minded. In fact, can’t stand sudoku, gimme my crosswords anytime, the harder the better!
By the way, and this is the Frenchie speaking, did you know that sudoku was invented by… the french? Yeah, really, don’t get confused by the not-so-very-french sounding name! Just check it out, here!

Monthly theme day: chimneys

The CDP portal is down again, so please click here to see what other participants to the monthly theme day did.

The chimneys of the old Sant Adria de Besos power plant are an emblem of Barcelona, you can see them from pretty much everywhere. As they are not in use anymore, there has been talks about destroying them. But the people of Barcelona County decided to keep them as a symbol of the town’s industrial past. What will become of them, nobody really knows yet.

And yes, there are some moorings for luxury yachts just next to it. Nice touch, no?

Tranquility…

…is today’s theme.

Dragons…

Whilst researching for this month’s theme day, I came across this particular bakery oven, with dragons acting as door handles. They’re really pretty, but probably too hot to touch!

Monthly theme day: bakeries

Came across this open air ecological bakery, during last week’s earth day celebrations.
This is for our monthly theme day.

Tomorrow, we will post something about dragons and bakeries.

And here is the bread

Monthly theme day: cobblestones

As you might or not know, the CDPB portal has been hacked.  But fortunately, you can still participate at the monthly theme day, thanks to a temporary blog set up specially for this occasion. Just link your post – not your blog! – to http://cdpbthemeday.blogspot.com.au/. Et voila! And of course, do the Linky thing, same as for other memes. No worries, it’s easy!
As for the portal, it’s been worked on, but it might take a while as it is a massive job to rebuild it. Thanks to those doing it, and a big go to hell to the hacker/s.
And now, let’s have a ball!
As I was wondering about the cobble in cobblestones, I checked it out. Here is what Wiki has to say:Cobblestones are stones that were frequently used in the pavement of early streets. “Cobblestone” is derived from the very old English word “cob”, which had a wide range of meanings, one of which was “rounded lump” with overtones of large size. “Cobble”, which appeared in the 15th century, simply added the diminutive suffix “le” to “cob”, and meant a small stone rounded by the flow of water; essentially, a large pebble. It was these smooth “cobbles”, gathered from stream beds, that paved the first “cobblestone” streets.
Widely used in Barcelona last Thursday to smash shop windows.

Singing the body electric

Another take on this month’s theme day, electricity. Well, you can play with it, as these kids did at the Cosmocaixa, Barcelona’s science museum. Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

Monthly theme day: electricity

Oooops, I totally forgot this month’s theme day, about electricity. Therefore, a second post for today, a photo taken from a speeding train in french Catalunya.

Monthly theme day: animals

This month’s theme day is about animals. Which is fine, as it allows me to stay a bit longer on the Chinese new year celebration.
I realize that, even though I’ve seen those cats very often (even have one in my office), I don’t know their exact meaning. A luck bringer??? Anyone?

December theme day: action shot

May Day: Theme Day!

Right, here we go again: the monthly theme day. Which caused a dilemma… Yep, what to post??? Barcelona mailboxes are big, ugly and yellow. Boring. People’s mailboxes are a bit more inventive, but I don’t have a single photo in my archive. Not feeling too well at the moment, going out for a photo shoot is not really an option.
So, here it is: a smiling green mailbox on the biutiful (!!!) island of Burano, in Venice’s laguna (with a little wink to our friends in Luxembourg).
It’s the orange house that did it! Wouldn’t you love living in an orange house???

Theme of the month: fountains

Here we are again, the CDP monthly theme day. Today, February 1st: fountains.
Well, this is one I made earlier, from our beloved Magic Fountain, Fons Magica. Admittedly reworked to death, but I think it was worth it. Don’t you love the 2 Asian (Japanese?) girls posing in the middle of the photo, and probably getting very wet?

Theme day: best of 2010

Today’s theme day is the best photo of last year, 2010. This is what I think is one of the best photo I took last year, on December 30th (2 days ago), when we finally met our first ever fellow bloggers and ‘old friends’, Cezar and Leia from Luxembourg Daily Photoblog. They are spending the new year festivities in Barcelona and Andorra. Lovely to meet them!
From left to right, Rob, Mandy, Leia, Cezar…

Theme day: Time

You might remember the summer of 1982 (if you’re old enough, that is). This little guy came to visit us by accident. All he wanted to do was to phone home. He did indeed fly home at the end of the summer.

28 years later… TIME flies. But…What happened to him???

Well, and this is breaking news: we are very happy to report that he chose the beautiful city of Barcelona for his long awaited comeback!

His planet’s money not being worth peanuts here, he was lucky enough to get this job, selling TIMEpieces in the Raval, in Carrer Tallers. Bienvenido a Barcelona, tio!

PS: original picture reworked, as it was very dark, and as I somehow had to get rid of the reflections on the window.

This is for the monthly theme day, this month’s theme being TIME.

Theme day: public transportation

It is theme day again. This month’s theme is public transportation.

This are the Golondrinas, spanish for swallows, leaving the old port to navigate along the beaches to Sant Adria de Besos and the Forum. Nice trip! My wish is that the municipality decides to transform what is a tourist thing into a regular public transportation. Might sound a bit silly, but think of Venice, or London’s water busses. Theme day: open air market

It is theme day again, the theme for this month of september is open air markets. Which was a problem for me, as most markets here are indoor. Until I remembered this small and open air handicraft market at  the Angel’s Gateway, el Portal de l’Angel, near Plaza Catalunya. Here is the lamp shop, one evening.

theme of the month: statues

1st of may. Happy day to all workers out there, specially to those actually working today. I just wish it didn’t fall on a saturday.
Anyway, theme day today: Statues. Which is a bit bad for me, as I showed you my favorite statues in Barcelona, the giant lobster, Botero’s ‘Gat’ and ‘el cul’ several times already. So…. Barcelona is famous for it’s living statues on the Rambla. Here is one, announcing spring a few weeks ago.

Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show

And if you listen very hard

When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll

Theme day: contrast

!st day of the month, theme day. Today’s theme is contrast.
Contrast of colors, shapes… And also, after the huge crowds of the last weeks, it is very nice to be able to have a quiet stroll in the evening. What you see here is a bit of Gehry’s Fish, the Mapfre Tower, the Barcelona Casino, all on the beach promenade near the Port Olimpic.

Theme day: BIG!!!

Based in Barcelona, this is the MS Voyager of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship. It became the world’s largest cruise ship when it entered service in 1999 (for a while, anyway).
The numbers are amazing:

Tonnage: 137,276 GT (gross tonnage)
Length: 1,020 ft (310.90 m)
Beam: 156 ft (47.55 m)
Height: 63 m (206.69 ft)
Draft: 29 ft (8.84 m)
Decks: 15
Propulsion: 3 x 14 MW Azipod propulsion, two azimuthing, one fixed
Speed: 23.7-knot (44 km/h; 27 mph)
Capacity: 3,138 passengers[1]
Crew: 1,181 crew

There is pretty much everything you can think of on that ship, even an ice skating rink and a wedding chapel! Cost half a billion dollars, after all!
Just behind, you can make up Montjuic Hill, and Barcelona Castle.

Should you want to know more, click here.

Theme day: night

On the first day of every month, we are having a theme day. Many of us post a photo, around the same theme. Today’s theme is night. Here is my small contribution, another photo of the Magic Fountain in Montjuic. Last week, they started a new show, mainly based on 80es music. Should you happen to be in town, go to see it!

Where is our blogger?

This blog is about Barcelona. But, in many ways, it is also a blog about freedom, freedom of speech, freedom of thinking, of movement, freedom of vote, just simply freedom.
Amir, a fellow blogger from Tehran, has disappeared because he dreamed of freedom. The CDP community has set today aside to raise awareness about what is going on in Iran, about what happens to freedom.
Suppressing ideas has never been a successful way to make them go away.
Green, not only the color of Islam, but also the color of hope.

Theme of the month: feet

This month’s theme, in the daily photo community, is: feet.

Took this picture by accident in the metro the other day. I was fiddling with my phone, and this is the result. I quite like this guy’s shoes, and the nonchalant posture… Cool.
